Safe

Written and directed by Samatha Crews & Connor Slattery, Safe is a short film shot entirely on the beautiful Coromandel Peninsular in New Zealand’s North Island.

Kate, in a desperate attempt to save her toxic long-term relationship with Nathan, organises a holiday in the Coromandel. On their first night they are interrupted by two lost tourists, who Nathan invites to stay. When Nathan organises a trip for them all to an iconic beach, things take a turn for the worst.

‘S A F E’ is an inspired retelling of a real-life crime that occurred in the late 1980s in the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. We were fascinated by the mysterious, unsolved nature of this particular crime and we wanted to tell a story that offered an alternative version of what could have happened. The story centres around a young couple’s toxic relationship, a theme we feel is compelling and relatable to young adult people who are our target audience. We chose a very raw approach in telling this story, opting for a hand-held shooting style to create a sense of immediacy. We chose an 80’s style bach to film in, as it evokes a sense of nostalgia and familiarity in a way that connects to New Zealand identity. At the heart of it we wanted to create a story written by young people, about young people, for young people.

Vaughn Brookfield Documentary

This was a piece created for Canon Australia and 'The Nameless’ which is a collaboration between professional Landscape & Commercial lifestyle photographer Vaughan Brookfield,
and his friend Tom Lynch who is the owner of ‘TomTom’,  the NZ event production company.
The two had been working together for well over a year in unique locations in the South Island of New Zealand, and were slowly building up to a more challenging subject, which turned out to be Tasman Glacier.
Tasman Glacier sits in the Mount Cook National Park, it is both beautiful and brutal if not taken seriously.
These mountains aren’t very kind to camera equipment let alone $80,000 projectors.

The Glacier’s retreat is accelerating, its not a fiction, its common knowledge that's passed on from all who operate in the area.
This is the reason behind the choice of location and the idea behind the entire project.
We wish to contribute to the conversation on global warming.

The outlier triumph tale mixes archive footage with recreations and candid interviews (Halberg’s battle with disability and doubt is poignant). NZ Herald critic Russell Baillie praised the result as “riveting” and “our Chariots of Fire”. Broken Brides Broken Promises

In the otherwise ordinary neighbourhoods of New Zealand cities, a scandal is happening. Women from Asian countries are being enticed into marriages here: marriages which turn violent and ugly, leading to death, misery and heartache.

Investigative reporter Rob Harley had an image in his mind that wouldn't leave him alone. It was the memory of a once vibrant and happy woman, who came to New Zealand looking for a brighter future, but the end result was a miserable death at the hands of a jealous and possessive man.

"I had filmed this poor woman, after she was shunted back to Malaysia," recalls Harley. "She lay dying in a Kuala Lumpur Hospital, and no-one seemed to offering any answers to the domestic violence that claimed her life."

The memories of that tragic end led Harley to start asking the question: How badly are Asian brides being treated in New Zealand?

The answer astonished him.

It turns out that one Asian Women's Rights groups is fielding up to 600 calls a month, about the desperate plight of young wives, who are being bashed, humiliated and in the words of one anguished Indian father, "tortured" behind closed doors in Kiwi homes.

The documentary "Broken Promises, Broken Brides," has required what Harley calls 'enormous courage' on the part of several women who've been told that either they or their family members will be killed if they speak out.
